RESOLUTION

The coconut tree is truly a “Tree of Life.” We have seen the numerous benefits it has given mankind, from its roots to the topmost leaves. Nothing is wasted in this particular tree. However the advent of modernization and industrialization has affected the prospect of this beneficial tree.

For the past 20 years, numerous coconut trees were felled down in many parts of the Philippines. The coconut trunks were used as building scaffoldings, and others were used as plain coconut lumber. Hundreds of hectares of precious coconut land were transformed into barren and arid wasteland. The wanton destruction of these precious trees was allowed for the sake of industrialization. Replacements of new coconut seedlings were mostly not initiated in areas were coco-lumbering went on rampage.

Now, soil erosion of the mountainside had given way to the danger of flooding and landslides. The previous cool climate of the coconut province of Laguna and Quezon are not being replaced by the stinging heat of the air which formerly were never experience in such areas.

Is there still a way to save the Tree of Life? There is a saying: “If there is a will, there is a way.” It took the Filipinos of the Spanish era to plant such trees as part of the Spanish governance over our islands. It has taken several of years to see this tree come to its full bloom and see the benefits of its fruit. Now, it takes only several hours of the power saw to fell such wondrous gift of God to humanity.

What can we do to save the coconut tree? It is time to stand up and unite to protect our environment. We are so busy with politics and other things and yet we forget to attend to the most basic of our needs. Let us approach our government in unity and ask for the protection of the coconut tree. It is only by standing up in unity and shouting with one voice that our plea can be heard. Let us not let this beautiful tree be a part of the extinct species of God’s creation.
